Pakistan vs Sri Lanka, 1st T20I
Series: Sri Lanka tour of Pakistan, 2019
Venue: Gaddafi Stadium,Lahore
Date & Time: Oct 05, 06:30 PM LOCAL

Having wrapped up a 2-0 series victory in the three-match ODI series, Pakistan's focus now shifts to the World T20 preparations as they gear up for the opening T20I against Sri Lanka on Saturday (October 5). With a full-strength team, going up against a Lankan side sans several of their star players who opted out of the tour, Pakistan will be eager to get back to their dominating ways in T20 cricket, having suffered reversals in their last two series against South Africa and England (one off game).

Before the last two losses, Pakistan had enjoyed an 11-series winning streak which took them to the top of the ICC T20I rankings for teams. Trying to emulate that streak while finding the ideal combination for the world event that takes place in Australia in a year's time will be a balancing act for coach Misbah-ul-Haq and skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed.

For Sri Lanka, ranked eighth in T20Is and without their front-line players, they'll have to punch above their weight in order to challenge Pakistan. But the shortness of the format might allow them to do just that, along with the hunger of the inexperienced lot to showcase their prowess and present their case for the future.

When: Saturday, October 5 at 6:30 PM Local Time

Where: Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore

What to expect: Scores of 180 and above were posted three times by Pakistan - batting first - in the last four T20Is played in Lahore, all in 2017 (in three matches against World XI and one match against Sri Lanka). A batting-friendly wicket is likely to be on offer again while the weather forecast also looks good with no rain predicted.

Team news:

Pakistan: Despite Imam-ul-Haq missing the series due to an injury and the experienced duo of Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez not part of the squad, the is no shortage of experience in the Pakistan lineup. The focus will be on Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Akmal who return to the team after a productive season of the PSL. Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz will man the pace department while Faheem Ashraf is also part of the squad having recently featured in the T20 Blast where he was the joint-highest wicket-taker for Northamptonshire. Shadab Khan and Imad Wasim will handle the spin responsibilities, with the former seeking a turnaround after a couple of expensive outings in the ODIs.

Sri Lanka: Danushka Gunathilaka, having scored a century in the last ODI, will be eager to carry his form into the T20 format while the talented Avishka Fernando will be eager to put his poor scores in the 50-over games behind him. Dasun Shanaka, set to captain Sri Lanka for the first time, will be hoping for an impressive start to his leadership career. Nuwan Pradeep, Lahiru Kumara, Kasun Rajitha and Lakshan Sandakan will be key with the ball as Sri Lanka will be hoping for a collective effort to catch Pakistan by surprise.

What they said:

"It is not easy to be making a comeback in the Pakistan side for the fifth-sixth time. Getting dropped again and again doesn't reflect well. But, where this is a negative, to keep coming back in the side is a positive. It demands ticking a lot of boxes and for that a lot of improvement has to be made" - Ahmed Shehzad.
